Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was instilled with the desire to explore her love of art by her aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt was a registered nurse who worked shifts at night so that she could commit her day to art literature or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was taught by her mother that art can be used as an instrument for activism. DuVernay had a mother who was knowledgeable about society and taught her how to make use of art as a method to express herself. While DuVernay grew up in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her dad's family was a part of the same for several generations. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she was in Selma to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at the college. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the garbage of one of jurors. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay started her first job as a PR professional in an unassuming production studio following her college. In 1999, she founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency also created a variety of promotions and lifestyle networks like the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
